Pg. 105 "...it was ample for for, spacious for two, but not spacious enough for Foyle and Jiz McQueen." This tells me that, while they have enough actual space between themselves, Jiz can't get far enough away from Gully. I belive that this is the beginning of a "falling-out" between the two. - Christian Graham

RE: My thoughts exactly. I wouldn't exactly say that Jiz can't get far enough away from Gully. I'd say it's both. I think they both like each other. They just both have different ways of showing it. Gully is attracted to her and you can definitely tell. Jiz is also. It's just more confusing. Good idea though. - Kaylee Goldsworthy =]

RE: i disagree with christian because shortly after this Foyle and Jisbella lay together in the cabin just "enjoying each other's presence." they also got along very well during the mission to recover the 20 million bullion from the Nomad. I think Jisbella and Nomad would have had a future together had Guly not been so selfish and had Gully actually cared for Jisbella the way she cared for him. Jiz payed $4000 for Baker to remove gully's tattoos but yet gully foyle didnt think twice before he left Jiz to dagenham's men. ~nicole dengler

When we discover that gullys scars from the tattoo removal show up when he gets angry, its appearant that his previous operation to get it removed wasn't 100% successful. I think it is wise of Jisbella to state that it is motivation to control his anger. Whats really neat is that the tattoo comes back the same color as a tiger.-Elias Taoufik

I don't think there is any doubt that Jiz likes Gully or cares for him, I think that maybe she doesn't want to. Like, she didn't know what he looked like before they escaped and she didn't picture him as the 'montrosity' he is. -Kayla Knisley

Pg. 111 "Your face, Gully. I know what's happened to your face." This is the point in the novel where Gully gets all worked up after Joseph finds him and they come face to face. Even though Gully went through the procedure of removing the ink from his face by Dr. Baker, it comes back. Both Gully and Jisabella are suprised that it the tattoo and color is back, with the same colors as a tiger. Jisabella eventually figures out that if he will 'never be able to give way to emotion...any emotion.' This creates a more suspenseful mood. -Nicole Crossman

I agree with you Nicole. But I don't understand, does the tattoo fade, when he's calm and not feeling any extreme emotion? It seems like it would be hard for him to keep himself calm, because his attitudes change from calm to hostile very easily so it would kinda blow his cover if anyone saw it. -Kelsey Baker

I think that the tattoo remaining is also a symbolism about how Gully still has alot of healing to do, emotional healing. Jiz helped him start to speak better, by teaching him in the jail cells. Also when Gully saved and went back for Jiz, he didnt leave her there. When they were escaping Jiz got weak and he pulled her up onto the shore, and didnt let her crash into the rosks. He didnt say hope you live like he did to his wife on the asteriod. He has come some way in not being so self absorbed but he's not done. -Kathryn Yacobucci

Response: I agree with Kathryn. I think that the tattoo coming back shows him that he may think he is done, but really he has a long way to go. I think Jiz plays a big role in this because she helps him evolve and change the 'beast' inside of him and all of his anger and hatred. She helps him open his eyes and see the world around him, that there is more to it than revenge. The tattoo also is a reminder of what he used to be and if he wants to change, he will have to deal with it. -Nicole Crossman

i also agree with kathryn and nicole on this one the tattoos that come back are a sign of healing and how much work he has to do to work on controlling himself and just being normal. -victor lemus.

I think the tattoo scars may be a symbol for something, I'm just not sure what. Maybe they are a symbol of the healing Gully still has to do, maybe they symbolize all the struggles he's had to go through, or maybe they are a symbol of how far he's come in being a better man, yet he still has a long way to go. I'm not quite sure, but I do believe they are going to help him a lot with controlling his emotions. - Danielle Heininger

Pg. 113 "Needle scars. They don't show normally, but they do show, blood red, when your emotions take over and your heart begins pumping blood...when you're furious or frightened or passionate or possessed...Do you understand?" This would be very stressful, to have to control yourself all the time. No one can help being frightened or passionate most of the time, and it's very difficult even to control anger. This tattoo would be useful in helping Gully tone down his emotions, how could he not express any emotion at all? It seems impossible. -Casey Pipetti

I would agree, but he does not care about what he looks like, he only cares about revenge. Once he has his revenge, then he will try to heel his face. -Bryant Sell

Response: While this does seem hard, I think it will be a learning experience for him and everyone else. He will build character and learn to control himself. He must learn to take a deep breath before he does something out of anger and before he says things he doesn't mean. This situation will be hard, but with determination and a big incentive, I think he will learn. He must always think before he acts and remember that when he shows a bit of emotion, his tattoo will show. I also think this symbolizes his character and how he will change throughout the book. -Nicole Crossman

Following up to Nicole's response, I agree with her. He will learn, because from now on, his tattoo will become noticeable with any form of emotion. Again, agreeing with Nicole, I too believe that this will show how Gully's character will change throughout the rest of the story. He must teach himself to be a calmer, more relaxed person. It will be fun watching him teach himself how to become this man the he must aspire to be. -The man, the myth, the legend...Cullen Schimminger

Pg. 119 "Gully, help me. Do something, Gully. I'm lost." Gully turns back to the animal behavior and show how stupid he is. Jiz really cared for Gully and she could have helped him, but instead he acts like a jerk and leaves her to die. He is am animal. He does not even feel remorse for leaving the girl that cared enough for him to help him get rid of his face. She even stayed with him on his death trip to get the money. He is losing something that could have changed his life. He is a jerk.

I think that Gully only has one thing on his mind, just like Jiz told him in the spaceship. No matter what, he won't let anything stop him from getting his revenge on Vorga, even if it means leaving the person he cares about most at that time behind. This just shows how intent he is on getting his revenge, and how savage he can be when it comes to getting it. However, he did show hesitation, something he wouldn't have shown earlier in the novel, which may show that he is developing some sort of feeling again. - Christian Graham

Pg. 113 "You can't ever lose control, Gully. You'll never be able to drink too much, eat too much, hate too much....You'll have to hold yourself with an iron grip." Well this kind of speaks for itself but i thought it was very important because it shows how Gully can't do anything to his fulliest potential and if so he brings the tattoo back until his blood pressure is stable.- Skipper

I agree with Skipper. This could also be a way for Gully to control his emotions because he doesnt want the tatoo to come back.- ALEX GEESEY

Pg. 107-108 "The burning expression on her face transformed Foyle's anger into passion. He enveloped her and buried his face in her breast. ... They floated together in the cabin, drowsing, murmuring, touching tenderly for hours." "Poor Gully," Jisbella whispered. "Poor darling Gully..." "Not poor,": he said. "Rich ... soon." Wow! I can't keep up with this woman. First she hates him and won't talk to him on days on end and now shes passionate with him?, This lady is really giving me a huge head ach. She needs to make up her mind either she hates him or she likes him one or the other not both. -- Jameson Holsinger :)

Pg. 111 "Foyle stared at the old man, took a step toward him, and then stopped, fists clenched, throat working as fury arose within him.....blood red against the pallor of the skin, scarlet instead of black, truly a tiger mask in color as well as design......Gully! My God! Your face!" Gully did have the tattoos removed to hide him but that only worked to some degree. Now everytime he gets mad, his face turns to a tiger. Gully is now going to have to learn to control his emotions so he wont give himself away.-Ashlee Carson

Pg. 119 when Gully blast away without Jisabella on board it just shows me he hasn't changed and his priorities are still revenge on Vorga's commander. Yes there was nothing he could do but he didn't even try. He simply went and left her and his enemy behind.-John Benton

To me i understand the whole, getting revenge on Vorga thing, but the situation has changed for him. When he blasts away without jisabella, it kinda was stupid because that motive is dumb anyway. Like i would be worring about other stuff now that i know i am gonna live. -Michael Maher

It almost seemed to me that Gully just went back to his old self, crazy, violent, revenge-driven, and another, alone. I don't know yet but it seems like Gully could be alone for awhile again since he blasted away like that, sort of like his time on the Nomad. Maybe not quite as long as that though. -Tim Galbraith

Pg. 115 "Forget it. Just practicing jokes." I noticed this in Ch. 5 I think it was, Gully seems to either be learning how to be more social (but showing it in the worst times like when they were escaping for their lives in the caverns outside of the prison ) or there's a very smart-alec side of him that's really starting to show. It really seems it could be a very wise-guy attitude that he may have deep down that we catch a glimpse of every now and then. -Tim Galbraith

Pg. 118 'They were Dagenham's crew in yellow and black banded spacesuit. They were buzzing around a single figure in white that dodged and spun and eluded them.' I wonder if there's any particular reason why Dagenham's thugs/men are looking like bees. Wheter is symbolization of some sort, and that Jisbella's suit is white, like it somehow indiccates some kind of cat and mouse game. Or it could just be Dagenham's standard issue uniform for people who work for him. -Tim Galbraith

Pg 106. Jisbella and Gully are arguing and she refuses to answer him. It seems to me that she is kinda bi-polar, at one moment she likes him and all, then she later flips out on him and decides it war between them.- *Aaron Gromiller*

pg. 113. "Needle scars. They don't show normally, but they do show, blood red, when your emotions take over and your heart begins pumping blood...when you're furious or frightened or passionate or possessed" what could Gully be doing or have done, or anything to feel any of these emotions, did something happen before that we dont know about? will we find out later on in the novel?- *Aaron Gromiller*

pg. 119. "I cant make it, Gully. Come on girl." here it seems also that Gully wants to be with(or have around) Jisbella, they seem to be very argumentative, why does he want her around so much? but it also seems like she wants to be with him. Thier whole situation with eachother doesnt make alot of sense. -*Aaron Gromiller*

Pg. 110 "After Nomad. I remember they were cementing her into the asteroid when i left. Don't remember where. Have to find her."
He is explaining his last memories of Nomad and he has a set ambition to find her quickly to get the money before Dagenham and the others can steal it back. He plans to use this money in his quest to destroy Vorga. - Mindy Hayton

Pg. 106 When Gully and Jisbella are fighting in the beginning of the chapter, I began to question the relationship between those two. Are they happy or are they angry? Does Jisbella regret going along with Gully? This relationship has my head twisted because of how inconsistent they can be. Sam Ellis

Pg. 111. "You wanted something that would control you, Gully. Well, you've got it. Your face. It-" Jisbella began to laugh hysterically. "You'll have to learn control now, Gully. You'' never be able to give way to emotion. . .any emotion. . .because-" When I realized what had happened, it added a little spark to the reading, and it made the story very interesting at this part. When Gully becomes emotional in any way, the reappearance of his tattoo occurs, along with the realistic colors of a tiger. It puts a very science fiction feeling at this part, because this obviously could never happen. But, I love this idea and how it was incorporated by Alfred Bester. -The man, the myth, the legend...Cullen Schimminger

Pg. 111 "Foyle stared at the old man, took a step toward him, and then stopped, fists clenched, throat working as fury arose within him.....blood red against the pallor of the skin, scarlet instead of black, truly a tiger mask in color as well as design......Gully! My God! Your face!" it is learned here that Gully's tattoo removal surgery only worked to some extent. Now whenever he becomes angry, or perhaps fells strong emotions, the tattoos return. this is another example of Gully being 'animalistic'. -taylor cashdollar

pg. 119. " 'vorga,' he said...that drove him" this paragraph is a bit confusing to me. does this mean that he freed himself? if so, is jisbella freed? is it important to know that Gully said "vorga" directly before breaking free? -taylor cashdollar

Pg. 111 "...throat working as fury arose within him. And Jisbella, looking at Foyle, cried out in horror. The old tattooing had returned to his face, blood red against the pallor of the skin, scarlet instead of black, truly a tiger mask in color as well as design." - This quote is expressing details. It's trying to show the beastality that Gully is showing just with his emotions. This is when the title Tiger, Tiger could have been a good name for the book, but the readers wouldn't have known what the book would have been about since emotions of Gully Foyle come into play later on. This quote is just amazing though. I really like that one. - Kaylee Goldsworthy =]

100. Pg. 107 " Foyle pursued her, seized her again and shook her violently. Her red hair burst out of the clip that gathered it at the nape of her neck and floated out like a mermaid's tresses. The burning expression on her face transformed Foyle's anger into passion. He enveloped her and buried his new face in her breast." To me this shows that Gully is still a brute and still has his beastly ways. Although he has become more civilized, he is still an animal among men. - The great Tyler Slippy

101. Pg.111 "Gully!" she cried. "My God! Your face!" Jiz and Gully were outside the Scientific Peoples home and Gully saw Joseph, the one who tattooed Gully, and GUlly got extremely angry. At this point, this is when Jiz screamed in terror. Gullys tattoos had come back from all the blood pumping through his body and made the tattoos glow bright red.
-Sasha Cochran

Pg. 114 "It's marked with yellow and black colors, like a hornet." I don't really understand why they are seen with yellow and black. Is there a reason they wear these colors or are they just random colors they picked. I'm thinking there might be a reason why its yellow and black but i'm not sure.
